Exercise balls are not a new thing. In fact, they have become quite popular over the last years as fitness specialists and doctors recommend them to those who need to improve their body posture and alleviate their back pain. We sit all day long at the workplace and we probably sit on chairs or sofas a lot at home as well. Lumbar pain, spine problems, balance issues, they all derive from our sedentary way of life. We sit too much. And if so, how about sitting on exercise balls at home to see how they work? Let’s see five reasons you should definitely get one!
1. Helps You Work Out Without Getting Up
Sitting on an exercise ball chair forces the body to work out involuntarily. While trying to keep your balance and not fall off of it (as it requires your core muscles), you will do some serious abdominal crunching and muscle work. Used for medium lengths of time, while watching TV, you will be able to build those 6-packs you’ve been dreaming about.
2. Improves Spine Alignment
Your body will have to stay balanced at all costs while sitting on an unstable exercise ball. In other words, while trying to achieve the proper balance, it will automatically search for the best position. This leads to the spine finding its natural and healthy posture. In turn, you will feel less back pain and an overall spine improved comfort.
3. Decreases Negative Effects of Prolonged Sitting
Sitting on a chair for hours is bad for us, and we have science to back up this conclusion. The worst problem with sitting, however, is the fact that we also tend to stay still, facing a monitor, usually, and move as little as possible during work hours. By contrast, while sitting on the exercise ball chair you need to switch your body position when you answer your phone or turn to talk to someone. Since the body needs to keep itself balanced, the exercise ball lowers the negative effects of sitting in the same position.
4. Improves Blood Circulation
As a corollary to all that has been said above, the exercise ball keeps your blood flow at healthy standards, as you crunch muscles and try to keep your balance. Sitting on a chair in the same position leads to poor blood flow, resulting in pain from head to toe and cold, stiff extremities. The exercise ball, on the other hand, keeps you moving, even if in a very low-key note.
5. Helps You Burn Down Some Calories
With all that inner movement, permanent position switching and permanent muscle workout through your entire body, there’s no wonder you end up burning some calories. Of course it doesn’t match a regular fitness program, but all in all you will feel more energetic and in a better shape.
