Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell Review
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is a good choice for anyone who wants to perform strength training in the comfort of their own home but do not have much space to dedicate towards exercise equipment.
It is often considered to be a good alternative to the popular Bowflex SelectTech 552, but does not suffer from the issue of the plates coming loose. It is also approximately $25 cheaper.

Via a single handle connected to a dial mechanism, the level of resistance can be changed. Changing the level of resistance is easy enough: as you turn the dial upward, the handle latches on to additional weight plates. There is also an easy-to-read display to inform you of how much weight you’ve chosen.
The weight of each dumbbell can be changed in 5-pound increments (the Bowflex SelectTech 1090 changes in 2.5-pound increments) and the weight adjusts from 10 pounds all the way up to 90 pounds, offering a great deal of versatility and making the SelectTech 1090 suitable for both males, who tend to want to bulk up, and females, who generally want to tone.
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 gives you the opportunity to perform an array of exercises, all targeting different muscles in different parts of your body, including:
Leg Exercises: Wide squat, calf raises, side lunge, reverse lunge
Back Exercises: Dead lift, wide row, alternating rows
Chest Exercises: Flat fly, incline fly, decline chest press
Abdominal Exercises: Ab crunch, reverse crunch, lying leg raise, twisting side crunch
Arm Exercises: Standing curls, scott curls, triceps kickback, hammer curl, overhead triceps extensions
Shoulder Exercises: Standing shoulder press, lateral raise, front raise, rear delt row
Just like the Bowflex SelectTech 552, the Bowflex 1090 comes with a SelectTech workout DVD – “Secrets of the 4 Step Rep.” While the DVD is of great use for those who are new to strength training, it’s likely that you will learn a new exercise as you watch, even if you’re experienced with performing strength training exercises (there are over 30 exercises with over 80 variations, after all). Furthermore, it’s handy to be able to see how each exercise should be peformed, for both safety and workout effectiveness reasons.
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 is backed by a 2-year warranty on all parts and weight plates, and 1-year warranty on labor.

Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell Review by Users :
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 appears to be a consumer favorite. It currently has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 from over 150 user reviews.
Users seem to appreciate just how quick and easy it is to select the weight, and are also thankful that the dial is “super easy to use.” According to one user, ” it just takes a couple seconds to dial in the weight you want.”
A certified personal trainer who has been “lifting regularly for nearly a decade” states that he can “tell you with absolute certainty” that the SelectTech 1090 “was the best purchase I’ve ever made to get a stronger, more muscular body.”
However, a few users feel that the bar is a little on the long side, which can lead to some trouble when doing certain exercises. For example, one user said that he ran into some difficulty when performing double arm curls, as the “weights hit when I get my arms close enough together.”

I love these things it’s literally everything you need , This is not our first set of SelectTech dumbbells – always very happy with them.
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090 I’ve had them for 6 months now and love them. So easy to switch between weights. Highly recommended.
Excellent set of dumbbells. This is the first time I have purchased a set of adjustable dumbbells and I absolutely love these made by Bowflex. They are very easy to adjust to whatever weight that you want to workout with. The handles are smooth and steady and easy to handle. I think these are great considering they easily replace all other dumbbells that you would have to have to use all these weights. It is also cheaper to buy these than purchasing all other dumbbells. I highly recommend these weights to anyone looking to start doing some dumbbell training.
Our only complaint is that the is that the handle edges have a tendency to bite into your hand at over 50 lbs. However, this isn’t as bad as it sounds, particularly as you can simply wrap the handle edges in tape, to make things a bit more comfortable.
Anything Else You Should Know about Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell Review?
You might want to purchase a stand, as it not only places the dumbbells within perfect reach, but also because the stand features rollers which makes it easier to roll the dumbbells to a location of your choice.
To conclude, whether you go for the Bowflex SelectTech 552 or the Bowflex SelectTech 1090, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. However, if you don’t want to run the risk of hurting yourself if the plates happen to come off at any time, then we would recommend the 1090, even though the 552 allows you to adjust the weight in smaller increments. You may also want to keep in mind that the 1090 features a maximum load of 90 pounds, while the 552 has a maximum load of 52.5 pounds.
