Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine Review
The Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine is the latest of the company’s rowers to hit the market and is similar to the Concept2 Model D in many ways. The main differences between the two are that the Model E sits up higher above the floor (+ 6 “), and that it comes with the PM4 computer monitor instead of the PM3, thereby allowing you to monitor your heart rate as you row (Suunto technology), PM4 has more memory capacity, on board racing against other rowing machines (wired & wireless) and the PM4 has rechargeable batteries included – your rowing will recharge them.

As with all Concept2 rowing machines, the rowing motion of the Concept2 Model E feels both smooth and natural, and is able to accurately mimic the feel of on the water rowing.
The flywheel, which provides the basis for the smooth rowing motion, has been designed in a way to minimize the noise of the machine when in use, but perhaps best of all, the spiral damper is able to let you control the feel of each pull, so you are in full control of the exertion and resistance as well. This is achieved by the spiral damper allowing you to easily adjust the airflow to the flywheel.
Just like the Model D, the Model E Indoor Rowing Machine comes with an ergonomically designed handle that is able to encourage a natural arm and hand position as you row, thereby virtually eliminating the risk of straining your hands, arms, and forearms.
The seat on the Model E, however, is different to the Model D, as it has a higher profile and therefore sits up higher above the floor (approximately the height of a chair seat). The Model E has a profile of 20″ and the Model D has a profile of 16″.
If you’re not sure which profile to is better suited to you, the most important thing to keep in mind is that you should opt for the Model E if you have or are likely to experience any issues with either balance or mobility -i.e if your knees don’t bend like they use to. Then again, many people choose the Model E simply because they prefer to sit higher off the ground.
Finally, the footrests do a good job of securely keeping your feet firmly in place, and can also be adjusted to accommodate all users, regardless of their foot size.
The performance monitor is the main difference between the two rowers. The Model D comes with the PM3, and the Model E with the PM4. Both monitors automatically switch on and off during use and after a few minutes of inactivity, feature the same 3″ x 3″ 160 x 160 resolution screen, come with many of the same display options, and can accurately provide you with feedback on speed, distance, pace, calories burned and watts, and more.
The PM4, however, comes with increased memory capacity (2MB instead of 1MB), the ability to support wireless racing between up to 8 machines with no extra equipment or computers needed, but best of all, it allows for wireless heart rate monitoring, thanks to the inclusion of a Garmin chest belt.
It’s also worth noting that the PM4 features a rechargeable battery pack, which recharges as you row; two extra games (Darts and Target Training); as well as the ability to allow for future expansion and additional features.
Due to the Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine having been designed in a way so to allow separation of the machine into two parts via its quick-release framelock mechanism, it doesn’t take up much space and is easy to store, because of the inclusion of caster wheels on the front of the rower.
The Concept2 Model E is backed by a 5-year frame and 2-year parts warranty.

While the only complaint in regards to the Model D was that it forced you to purchase additional equipment to monitor your heart rate, the Concept2 Model E does not suffer from this problem, and therefore has very little to complain about.
However, if we were being fussy then we would say that there is a bit too much plastic for our liking (plastic handlebar mounts, plastic wheels, plastic extension arm for the computer monitor), but then again, considering that the chances of the Model E breaking down are very slim, this doesn’t pose too much of a problem.
Anything Else You Should Know?
All you need to know is that whether you can go for the Model D or Model E, you won’t be disappointed. They are both very well constructed, reliable and can offer an excellent workout. However, as mentioned, if you prefer a higher seat profile and/or want to be able to monitor your heart rate, then opt for the Model E.
