For several years now, the Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer, along with the Precor EFX 5.33 has been one of the company’s best selling models. While some may be put off by the high price tag, the EFX 5.23 is actually reasonably priced, if you consider that it has been designed and engineered by Precor.
Precor have been able to establish themselves as one of the most popular and respected manufacturers of ellipticals (and fitness equipment, in general) and can charge a premium because their machines have a “feel” that their competitors find incredibly hard to replicate.
This review has to start off by mentioning the patented CrossRamp technology, which allows you to adjust the incline of the ramp. Adjusting the incline allows you to target various muscle groups, including those found in both the upper and lower body. While the ability to obtain a full-body workout is not unique to Precor, the way in which a true elliptical motion is maintained as you adjust the incline is.
However, unlike the higher priced Precor ellipticals, you are required to manually adjust the ramp with the EFX 5.23, and only have three positions to choose from. Some users like to make constant adjustments as they work out, while many others don’t, so manual inclination may not be a problem for you, depending on your preferences.
True Elliptical Motion
The other main selling point of the Precor EFX 5.23, or any other Precor crosstrainer, is the natural and smooth elliptical motion.
Thanks to the rear drive mechanics, the EFX 5.23 is one of the smoothest and quietest machines on the market. No matter how hard you push it, the machine will remain virtually silent.
8 Programs & 16 Resistance Levels
The Precor EFX 5.23 comes equipped with 8 preset programs, including weight loss, manual, interval, hill climb, heart rate, gluteals, fat burner and cross trainer, and 16 resistance levels, to make sure that your workout is kept varied and challenging.
A nice touch is the warm-up and cool-down periods which are built into the programs, as they can help you avoid any kind of muscle strain or injury.
The stylish, oversized, easy-to-read monitor tracks everything that you could want to know as you workout, including workout time, strides per minute, distance traveled, calories burned, resistance level and program profile.
Telemetry and touch heart rate monitoring is also included, and works via the Smart Rate System, which instantly analyzes your heart rate when you input your age and weight. This Smart Rate technology is also able to help you stay in your peak, cardio or fat burn cardio zone, so you are able to enjoy a more efficient weight-loss and cardio workout.
The Precor EFX 5.23 comes with a lifetime frame and welds, 5-year parts and 1 year labor warranty, which is more generous than many other models in this price range.
76 x 29 x 62 inches
The Precor EFX 5.23 has received solid reviews since hitting the market, with reviewers stating that the construction quality is top notch, the elliptical motion is very smooth, and the 16 resistance levels do an excellent job of challenging them, whatever their fitness level may be. However, some have complained about the positioning of the On/off switch and the lack of user memory.

Besides the aforementioned points, there is very little to complain about. However, the fact that the incline is controlled manually rather than automatically may also be an issue for some. If so, you will probably want to upgrade to the EFX 5.25.
Anything Else You Should Know?
There isn’t much to add. All you need to know is that Precor have over 250 patents on their fitness equipment. The company places a much greater emphasis on research and development than their competitors, which has resulted in them being able to produce ellipticals, such as the Precor EFX 5.23 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer, with unrivaled quality.
