Schwinn 431 Review
The Schwinn 431 is based on the popular Schwinn 430 but with a few notable differences. Schwinn seems to have taken what consumers said about the 430 on board and have therefore designed an elliptical that comes with more programs, a backlit display, a fan, and perhaps most importantly, higher quality components and parts.

Assembling the elliptical is a relatively straightforward yet time consuming process. Assembly is straightforward because the instruction manual is well written and you are given all the tools necessary for assembly, but many people have stated that it took them 2-3 hours to fully assemble the machine.
The Schwinn 431 features a stride length of 18″, which is the norm in this price range and just short of the Schwinn A40. While the stride feels both smooth and natural, especially as it accurately mimics your walking or jogging motion, those who are 6′ 2″ and taller will probably want to look at ellipticals with a 20″ stride, otherwise they may feel confined as they work out and not get the most out of the elliptical.
The reason for the smooth and natural motion is down to the 25-pound flywheel, which is actually heavier than usual. So while this results in a more comfortable stride, it also means that the machine doesn’t wobble from side to side as you work out.
There are a total of 16 resistance settings. Adjusting the level of resistance is a simple process thanks to the easy-to-turn adjustment knob, and with 16 levels of resistance at your disposal, you can be sure that you will find a level of resistance that is challenging enough for you, even if you have the body of a Greek god or goddess.
The Schwinn 431 comes with a very generous 19 workout programs. These consist of 10 Profile, 3 Heart Rate Control, 2 Custom, a Manual, Calorie Goal, Time Trial and Fitness Test programs.
All these programs do a very good job of varying your workout while keeping things interesting in the process. Furthermore, with so many programs at your disposal you’ll be unlikely to give up on your fitness regime due to monotony, which is the most cited reason as to why people stop working out, making it more likely that you will fulfill your short term and long term fitness goals.
As mentioned, the stride of the Schwinn 431 feels both smooth and natural, resulting in a comfortable workout experience. However, the articulating foot plates shouldn’t be overlooked, particularly as the pedals pivot to support your natural motion. This is not only beneficial for comfort reasons, but also because it reduces fatigue during your workout, helping you to exercise for a longer amount of time.
The computer console provides you with feedback on the most important information you would want to know as you work out, and more, including, resistance, number of calories burned, speed, distance, watts, rpm, time and interval time.
Your heart rate is also recorded thanks to the contact heart rate sensors which can be found in the handlebars. Surprisingly, all the readings are accurate, even your heart rate, which is rarely the case with elliptical trainers.
Moving and storing the Schwinn 431 is easy enough despite its heaviness. This is because the elliptical features transport wheels.
The Schwinn 431 is backed by an excellent warranty – 15 years on the frame, 2 years on parts, 1 year on electronics, and 6 months on wear parts.

Schwinn 431 User Reviews
With over 200 reviews to its name, and with over 80% of consumers having awarded the Schwinn 431 with either 4 or 5 stars, we think that’s it safe to say that it’s been very well received by consumers.
Users have praised the range of technological features; the smooth, natural stride; as well as the effectiveness of the workout received.
However, you should also keep in mind that the biggest complaint by far is that the fan is virtually worthless, as the stream of cool air isn’t powerful enough to be refreshing.

While we appreciate the inclusion of a built-in fan we feel that it isn’t powerful enough to be effective. The assembly process, while not being particular complex, is quite time consuming.
