In recent years, elliptical trainer manufacturers have been pushing the concept of a low-impact, dual workout elliptical to new heights. A good example is the Smooth Fitness Agile DMT Trainer, which offers a range of motions, rather than the basic motion that is usually associated with these pieces of exercise equipment. Consequently, you receive a more complete, intense workout than what you will usually find on your standard elliptical.
Dynamic Motion, according to Jim Mugford – head of Smooth customer service team- is a process that is able to guide your body through twelve different motions, which enables muscles from all parts of your body to be worked out. This, in turn, results in a leaner, stronger and more agile you.
The issue with elliptical trainers is that people report that it does not feel as if they are getting enough of a strenuous workout. And while the stress felt in your knees and ankles is less than that of a treadmill or exercise bike, it still exists. Not to mention that the repetitive movements strain your joints, results in a boring workout and only works out a few muscles. Fortunately, the Smooth Fitness Agile DMT Trainer changes all that by incorporating:
A forward motion– which works out your core muscles, glutes and quads
A reverse motion– which works out your hamstrings and calves
Combined Motion– which tones your shoulders, arms, chest and back
You should also note that, according to the University of Idaho, varying your stride length results in a larger variety of muscle groups being targeted, which helps you burn more calories without the need to increase your level of exertion.
The articulating foot pedals further add to the increased focus on different muscle groups. Additionally, these pedals move in line with your stride, which decreases the stress felt in your ankles as well as any numbness in your feet.
The thumb controls, which are located in the handlebars, give you the ability to change both the resistance and Agile motion without the need to break your stride, which we feel is a nice touch.
The handlebar pulse readout also means that, again, there is no need for you to break your stride to receive a reading of your heart rate.
Speakers & iPod Compatibility
The Smooth Fitness Agile DMT Trainer comes equipped with speakers and an iPod docking station, so you can listen to music as you workout. However, it would have been nice if the machine supported other MP3 player models.
This elliptical comes with a lifetime frame and brake, 7 year parts and electronics, and 2 year labor warranty, which speaks volumes about the durability of the Agile DMT.
73 x 31 x 65 inches
On the whole, the reviews for the Agile DMT have been favorable, with special mention going to the smoothness of the elliptical motion, the range of workout programs, the console’s user interface, as well as the welcome inclusion of a wireless heart rate monitor. However, some users have stated that the speakers could be improved upon.
Besides the sound quality of the speakers, there isn’t much to complain about. However, assembling this elliptical may take you a few hours, particularly if you do not have experience in assembling machinery – fitness equipment or otherwise. If you want an elliptical that has an easy assembly process, then have a look at theSmooth Fitness CE-3.6.
Anything Else You Should Know?
There isn’t much to add. All you need to know is that the Smooth Fitness Agile DMT Trainer is a well-built, innovative piece of equipment that delivers solid results by targeting more muscles than other elliptical trainers on the market. Despite its effectiveness, we would hesitate to recommend it at its original retail price, but at under $2,500, we think that it a steal.
