Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 Elliptical Trainer Review
The Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 Elliptical Trainer represents excellent value in its price range. Many manufacturers in this price range focus on packing their machines with features thar are usually nothing more than a novelty. However, Smooth’s ethos has always been to produce quality machines at low prices – the CE-3.6 is no exception.
For example, a top consumer magazine awarded the CE-3.6 with a Recommended rating, with the machine scoring highly for construction, user safety, ergonomics and exercise range.
The Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 is on the heavy side for an elliptical, weighing in at 175 lbs. However, while this means that it can be a struggle to move the machine from one location to the other, it can also be seen as advantageous. This is because the weight adds to its stability – particularly thanks to the heavy gauge steel used in the construction process – meaning that it is suitable for users who weigh up to 300 pounds to use.
While the length of the stride is suitable for most people, those who are over 6 foot may want to consider a different model. However, if you are under 6 foot you can expect to enjoy a very smooth working out experience.
Drive & Braking System
The CE-3.6 uses an electro-magnetic drive which means that there are fewer parts contained in the braking system, and the resistance is created by electrical currents, rather than by moving magnets. These features are typically found on high-end ellipticals, and not necessarily the ones that retail for under $2,000.
Elliptical trainers are either rear or front drive. The Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 is a rear drive machine, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a better. However, there are a few advantages of this type of drive mechanism, including:
-Fewer moving parts, which means less service issues.
-Fewer moving parts and sealed bearings result in a very quiet mechanical operation.
-You can enjoy a more natural elliptical stride as a rear drive machine has a habit of centering your body, whereas front drive ellipticals can warp the elliptical motion, as you must lean forward to work out.
While the inclusion of speakers tends to be the norm nowadays, the Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 differentiates itself from its competitors by raising the speakers closer to your head, so the apex is where it should be.
Smooth have included an iPod docking station on this model instead of an MP3 plug-in, which typically results in better sound quality, although it would have been nice if compatibility for all MP3 players was included.
Smooth are renowned for equipping their machines with some of the best consoles and displays in the industry, particularly as they are over sized and easy-to-read. On the Smooth Fitness CE-3.6, you can receive feedback simultaneously for time, speed, distance, calories burned, heart rate and resistance level.
While the fan is nothing to write home about, it does a good job of providing relief when you need it most during a tough workout.
Heart Rate Sensors
Many elliptical manufacturers equip their machines with heart rate sensors that can be found on stationery grips, which means that you are required to remove your hands from the handlebars to measure your pulse. As you want to know what your heart rate is as you workout both your lower and upper body, this begs the question, why do manufacturers continue to do this? Fortunately, the CE-3.6 does not suffer from this problem.
We said that Smooth do not include many technological features on their fitness equipment; however, they do so when they think that the user will greatly benefit from the technology. An example of this is MySmooth Technology, which allows you to customize workouts that are in line with your goals. You also have the ability to transfer the stats on the Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 onto your online account, so you can track your progress.
Pivotal Foot Pedals
The Smooth Fitness CE-3.6 ergonomically designed, pivotal foot pedals do an excellent job of reducing the strain felt on your joints as you workout. This is done by the foot pedals mimicking your foot movement as you exercise. This also means that your hips, knees and ankles are kept in alignment to provide a greater level of comfort as you workout, by eliminating numbness to your feet – a common complaint with ellipticals.
This elliptical comes with a lifetime frame and brake, 3 year parts and electronics, and 2 year labor warranty, which is better than many what many other manufacturers offer in this price range.
76 x 67 x 26 inches
The CE-3.6 has been well received since its release, with users stating that its strong points are the very smooth, natural elliptical motion; the comfort and effectiveness of the workout; as well as the construction quality of the machine. However, Smooth Fitness’ customer service has received a few complaints.

There isn’t much to complain about. Although, you should note that you should securely tighten all of the bolts on the machine, otherwise you might hear a slight squeaking sound as you workout.
